The OSCE reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening co-operation in countering terrorism during the 2026 United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week, held from 26 June to 2 July, as States, international organizations, civil society, academia and the private sector gathered in New York, the United States to advance a shared response to the evolving terrorist threat.
“Through our work on countering terrorism and violent extremism, the OSCE continues to support participating States in aligning their national counter-terrorism strategies with comprehensive, human rights-based and gender-responsive approaches, ensuring that security and human rights are mutually reinforcing,” highlighted Fejzo Numanaj, Deputy Head of Action Against Terrorism Unit, OSCE Transnational Threats Department.
The Counter-Terrorism Week provided an important opportunity to deepen co-operation between the OSCE and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), as well as to exchange views with other partners on practical ways to translate global commitments into action. The OSCE’s engagement reflected its broad mandate to address transnational threats through prevention, capacity-building and multilateral co-operation.
As part of the Counter-Terrorism Week, the OSCE co-organized two side events together with partners:
The first event, co-organized with Austria and the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, focused on evolving risks related to terrorist financing within gaming and gaming-adjacent platforms and the importance of gender-sensitive and inclusive prevention approaches. It also examined the role of AI-driven systems, platform policies, and the need to ensure that responses are effective only while upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The second event, co-organized with the UNOCT, UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate, Council of Europe, Finland and Turkmenistan, on national and regional counter-terrorism strategies, emphasized the value of strategy design and implementation that are informed by experience, grounded in international human rights standards, and supported by effective co-operation among national authorities, regional organizations and international partners.
The Counter-Terrorism Week concluded with the General Assembly’s adoption of the Ninth Biennial Review of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and renewed determination to combat terrorism and promote global peace and security.
